CLAPA CHAMPIONSHIPS
National Watersports Centre – Nottingham
7 – 8th June 2014
Despite a poor weather forecast with warnings of blustery winds and
possible thunderstorms, together with worries regarding the state of
the circles, the event started on time with reasonable conditions. The
rain interrupted play for three hours in the middle of the day but the
time was put to good use by holding the CLAPA AGM in a marquee lent to
us by the Centre management. Flying resumed at 2pm and continued into a
lovely evening, some events even getting ahead of schedule. Sunday was
fine but with considerably more wind and some fliers opted not to carry
on.

Conditions started off with light rain but by start time it had
stopped, hardly any wind and the ground was firm. Our usual format 3
rounds best two count for w/dale trophy, all 3 for Nev. Dickinson cup.
Ron Greenwood came to fly class 2 as there was no other entry for this
event we let Ron fly at the end of each round with his ST51 Claus Makis
design Big Tiger .
Mervyn had the highest single round score of the day, but Barry’s
flights were more consistent, that made Mervyns 2 round score higher
for the W/dale comp and Barrys 3 round score higher for the Nev. Cup

A
very blustery day with rain forecast by afternoon, the comp got off to
an early start thanks to a relaxation of the Sunday rules by the OW
authorities. This comp is unusual in that it is only two rounds and
both of them are added to make the final score. This demands
consistency with no ‘throwaway’ score to lose. The wind caused some
fliers to fly safe rather than risk models so early in the season, but
thankfully there were no accidents. Interestingly, this was the first
comp in Britain that was won by an electric model, a ‘Klinical’ flown
by Paul Winter.
